Role Summary

The Commvault L2 Backup Engineer is responsible for providing advanced operational support, troubleshooting, and administration of enterprise backup environments leveraging Commvault solutions. This role involves resolving escalated issues, maintaining backup infrastructure, and ensuring data protection and recovery processes meet organizational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, monitor, and optimize enterprise backup environments using Commvault to ensure reliable backup and recovery operations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve L2 backup, restore, and infrastructure issues while performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
  • Perform Commvault configuration, patching, upgrades, and maintenance in accordance with organizational standards and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with Storage, Virtualization, and Network teams to support integrated backup solutions and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and escalation support to L1 engineers, managed service providers, and customers.
  • Ensure backup and disaster recovery operations align with business continuity and data protection objectives.
  • Maintain backup documentation, operational procedures, configuration records, and prepare regular health and performance reports.
  • Perform capacity planning, storage utilization analysis, and optimization of backup infrastructure, including SAN, NAS, and Object Storage integrations.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of IT experience, including at least 2 years of hands-on experience in Commvault backup administration and support.
  • Strong experience with enterprise-scale backup, recovery, archiving, and data protection solutions using Commvault.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting backup software, tape libraries, disk-to-disk backup systems, SAN connectivity, and storage integration.
  • Good understanding of storage protocols (NFS, CIFS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel), networking fundamentals, and Windows/Linux operating systems.
  • Experience in backup capacity planning, storage optimization, and disaster recovery best practices.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, communication, documentation, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work in a 24×7 or rotational shift environment as required.

Preferred Background

  • Commvault or other enterprise backup solution certifications.
  • Experience with automation and scripting using PowerShell, Python, or Shell scripting.
  • ITIL Foundation certification or experience working in ITIL-based operational environments.
  • Exposure to enterprise backup platforms such as Veeam, Cohesity, or Veritas NetBackup.
  • Familiarity with enterprise storage technologies including NetApp, Dell EMC, and Data Domain.
